Does anyone currently make wheels in the old schwinn size?

by Cruiser Chick on July 10, 2010

i don’t know much about this stuff but i have an old schwinn collegiate. apparently one of my wheels is damaged though so i need to get a new one. i know someone makes tires that size but i was wondering if there were new wheels i could buy that would be a little cheaper than getting a vintage one?

The answer isn’t so simple.

The Collegiate was made in 2 different wheel sizes- 27″ and 26″. If your bike has 27″ wheels then you can use any 27″ wheel. If you have 26″ wheels then I am afraid you are out of luck unless you can find a parts bike. Schwinn made the rims, frame tubing, and much of the other stuff themselves so it is highly unlikely that there is an aftermarket source.. but I have another solution.

The Schwinn 26″ wheels were just a tiny bit bigger than other lightweight (NOT mountain bike) 26″ wheels. After verifying that you can readjust the brake pads lower just look for some 26 x 1 3/8″ wheels, readjust the brakes, and you are ready to go.
